Why We Chose BioGlitter® (And Why Not All "Biodegradable" Glitter Is the Same)
If you've ever searched for eco glitter, biodegradable glitter or plant-based glitter, you've probably noticed something confusing.
Almost every brand seems to claim they're environmentally friendly.
Some say they're biodegradable.
Some say they're compostable.
Others simply say they're "plant-based."
The problem is that these words don't all mean the same thing.
As consumers, it's easy to assume that if something is made from plants, it must naturally break down wherever it ends up. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.
When we began creating The Little Potion Co., we knew glitter would become one of the most magical parts of our potion kits. But we also knew that, unlike festival makeup or decorations, our glitter was designed to be mixed with water. That meant much of it would eventually end up going down household drains.
We didn't just want glitter that sounded environmentally friendly.
We wanted glitter that was independently tested for exactly the environment it was most likely to enter.
What is BioGlitter®?
BioGlitter® is made differently to conventional plastic glitter.
Instead of using PET plastic, BioGlitter® uses a specially engineered cellulose film derived primarily from sustainably sourced eucalyptus.
More importantly, the specific BioGlitter® we use has been independently certified to TÜV OK Biodegradable WATER standards.
That certification is significant because it specifically tests biodegradation in freshwater environments.
In other words, it has been tested for the very place our potion glitter is most likely to end up.
Why Certification Matters
One of the biggest misconceptions in the glitter industry is that the words "biodegradable" or "eco-friendly" are regulated descriptions.
They're not.
Many products can be marketed using broad environmental language without explaining exactly how, where or under what conditions they actually biodegrade.
This is why independent certification matters.
Rather than relying on marketing claims, third-party testing looks at whether a material genuinely breaks down under specific environmental conditions.
It's the difference between saying something is biodegradable and being able to demonstrate it through recognised scientific testing.
Isn't Plant-Based Glitter Automatically Better?
Not necessarily.
Many glitters marketed as biodegradable are made from PLA (polylactic acid), a plastic created from renewable crops such as corn starch.
Because PLA comes from plants, it's often assumed to behave like natural materials once discarded.
However, where something comes from and how it breaks down are two very different things.
Many PLA materials require the high temperatures, carefully controlled humidity and industrial composting conditions found in specialised commercial composting facilities before they degrade effectively.
Those conditions don't exist in most Australian backyards, household compost bins or natural waterways.
If PLA ends up in rivers, lakes or oceans, it may persist far longer than consumers expect.
That's why simply reading "plant-based" on a label doesn't tell the whole story.
Why We Specifically Chose TÜV OK Biodegradable WATER
As a children's business, we always start by asking one question:
How will families actually use this product?
With our potion kits, the answer was obvious.
Children create magical potions by mixing ingredients into water. When the adventure is finished, most families empty the potion into the sink, garden or compost.
That meant we needed to consider where our glitter would realistically end up, not where we wished it would end up.
For us, choosing glitter independently certified to biodegrade in freshwater environments simply made the most sense.
It aligned with the real-life way our products are used.
A Changing Global Conversation
Around the world, regulators are taking a much closer look at intentionally added microplastics.
The European Union has introduced significant restrictions on many conventional plastic glitters as part of broader legislation aimed at reducing microplastic pollution and in fact the EU have also just banned any plastic or PLA from products which has glitter permanently incorporated into a solid matrix and its intended end use of a duration is less than one year.
These changes have encouraged manufacturers to develop genuinely biodegradable alternatives that have undergone independent testing, rather than relying on broad environmental claims.
It's another reminder that the conversation around glitter is changing quickly and that evidence is becoming increasingly important.

At The Little Potion Co., every decision starts with one simple question:
Would we feel comfortable using this with our own children?
We know glitter brings wonder. It transforms ordinary water into something magical.
But we also believe magic shouldn't come at the expense of the environment.
That's why we choose certified BioGlitter®.
Not because it's trendy.
Not because it sounds good on packaging.
But because when children pour their potions away, we wanted to know we'd done everything reasonably possible to choose the better option.
