It's one of those childhood moments that captures attention instantly. The shimmer, the sparkle, the excitement of creating something that feels truly magical.
That's exactly why glitter has become such a popular ingredient in DIY potion recipes online.
But it's also why we believe it's worth asking one important question.
What happens after the magic is over?
Every Potion Has a Journey
Unlike glitter used on greeting cards or decorations, potion glitter isn't designed to stay in one place.
It's mixed into water.
Once children have finished making their potions, that water usually ends up being poured down the sink, into the garden or onto the compost.
That means whatever is floating in that potion has its own journey beyond the play session.
As a business creating products for children, we don't think our responsibility ends when the potion is finished.
Why We Don't Use Conventional Plastic Glitter
Traditional craft glitter is typically made from PET plastic (you know the ones you get from your local craft shop)
It's incredibly durable, which is exactly why it sparkles so beautifully and of course its super cheap, so bonus for when you're making potions and its being thrown away.
but unfortunately, that durability also means it doesn't simply disappear once it's washed away.
Instead, those tiny plastic particles can persist in the environment for a very long time.
and for us, this is just not something we can be part of.
If we were creating a product specifically designed to be mixed with water, we didn't feel conventional plastic glitter aligned with the values we wanted our business to represent.
"It's Only a Tiny Bit..."
It's true.
A single potion contains only a very small amount of glitter.
But that's also true for every other craft activity, classroom project, festival, greeting card and DIY recipe.
Environmental impact isn't usually caused by one person.
It's the result of millions of small decisions repeated over time.
When thousands of families are making magical potions every year, those tiny amounts begin to add up.
We believe small choices matter.
Why We Invested in a Better Alternative
When we first began looking into glitter, we quickly discovered that not all alternatives are created equal.
Many products are marketed as "eco", "green" or "biodegradable", but those words don't always explain how the glitter behaves once it enters the environment.
Because our glitter is designed to be mixed into water, we wanted something that reflected the way our products are actually used.
That's why we chose BioGlitter® carrying TÜV OK Biodegradable WATER certification.
It has been independently tested for biodegradation in freshwater environments the place our potion glitter is most likely to end up.
For us, that was an important distinction.
DIY Potions Can Still Be Magical
One of the things we love most is seeing families create their own magical ingredients at home.
Flower petals from the garden.
Lavender from the backyard.
Herbs from the kitchen.
Natural colours.
Fizzing ingredients.
The creativity is endless.
If you're making DIY potions, we'd simply encourage thinking about every ingredient that goes into them not just how magical it looks in the bowl, but where it goes afterwards.

At The Little Potion Co., we've never wanted to create products that simply look beautiful for a few minutes.
We want to create magical experiences that children remember for years.
At the same time, we believe those experiences shouldn't come at the expense of the world they're growing up in.
That's why we choose certified BioGlitter® instead of conventional plastic glitter.
Not because we expect every family to know the difference.
But because we believe it's our job to ask those questions before our products ever reach your home.
Children shouldn't have to choose between wonder and caring for the planet.
We don't think businesses should either.
