Whether you're preparing for a Halloween party or just looking to add some interactive potion play to your sensory play, these three DIY potions will have your children bubbling with excitement. All you need is a few household ingredients.
Every witch and wizard in the making needs a witches brew! It’s the perfect DIY potion to literally add anything you like. Of course it needs to bubble and fizz, but it’s a great potion to add any spooky little rubber characters you have laying around the house. (Just remember to clean them up afterwards)!
You will need: Ingredients:
- 1 cup of warm tap water
- A few drops of green food colouring
- 1/2 cup of baking soda (Bicarbsoda)
- 1/4 cup of plain vinegar

- A large cauldron or mixing bowl
Instructions:
1. Begin by adding the warm water to your cauldron, then the baking soda. Stir well until the baking soda is fully dissolved.
2. Drop in the green food colouring and give it a good stir. This is where the potion starts to look a little eerie!
3. Sprinkle in some bio glitter for that magical touch.
4. Now, for the fun part: slowly pour in the vinegar and watch the potion bubble and fizz, just like a real witch's brew! Add in any extra ingredients, such as rubber spiders or some dried black eye peas (eyeballs) to create a fun an interactive sensory play.
This potion is a great way to teach your kids about chemical reactions while also letting them indulge in a bit of spooky fun.
The most potent of liquids, and a fun addition to Halloween potion play. Just one drop of this sticky goo, can entice its spell caster to find super speed and strength when used in the correct potion.
- 1/2 cup of cranberry juice
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon of corn syrup
- 2-3 drops of red food colouring
- Small plastic vials or bottles
Instructions:
1. Mix the cranberry juice and water in a bowl, stirring until the potion is well combined.
2. Add the corn syrup to give the potion a slightly thicker, more blood-like consistency.
3. Stir in a few drops of red food colouring to deepen the colour to a dark, rich red.
4. Pour the mixture into small vials or bottles and seal them tightly.
You now have your very own potion ingredients for spooky play. Add some bicarb and vinegar to your mix if you want it to fizz and bubble.
This Ghostly glow potion is sure to captivate your little magic maker as they watch their potion come to life with an eerie and exciting glow. It’s the perfect addition to any Halloween potion-making station and adds a bit of science magic to the mix!
You will need a UV torch for this one, that you should find out your local hardware or camping store.
- 1 cup of tonic water
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- A few drops of glow-in-the-dark paint (non-toxic)
- Blacklight or UV light
Instructions:
1. Start by mixing the tonic water and regular water in a bowl.
2. Slowly add the cornstarch, stirring continuously until it’s fully dissolved.
3. Add a few drops of glow-in-the-dark paint and mix well. The potion should start to have a slight glow.
4. Pour the potion into clear jars or bottles and set them under a blacklight or UV light to watch them glow!
