New Moon Magic: Why Setting Intentions Matters (And How to Do It With or Without a Potion)

New Moon Magic: Why Setting Intentions Matters (And How to Do It With or Without a Potion)

There’s something special about a new moon.
It’s quiet. It’s dark. It’s full of possibility.

No matter what kind of week you’ve had or year, for that matter the new moon invites you to pause, reset, and ask:

What do I want to create from here?

At TLPC we believe in the power of rituals especially the kind that make space for reflection, imagination, and a fresh start. That’s why we love using the new moon as a time to set intentions, and yes… maybe whip up a little moon-charged magic while we’re at it.

But first

What is intention-setting, anyway?

Setting an intention is like planting a tiny seed. It’s a quiet promise to yourself. A guiding word or thought that helps steer your energy, actions, and emotions toward something good.

Unlike goals (which are outcome-focused), intentions are more about your mindset. They help you stay connected to what matters to you, especially when life gets a bit messy.

And during a new moon?
Intentions feel extra powerful.

That’s because the new moon marks the beginning of a fresh lunar cycle. It’s the symbolic “blank page” of the sky, a clean slate for you to dream big, get clear, and tune back in to your inner magic.

Our Favourite New Moon Ritual: Potion Making

In our A New Beginning potion ritual, we invite children (and parents too!) to take a moment to reset, reflect, and create a little fizzy magic filled with hopes for the month ahead.

To create the potion:

Add to your bowl the following ingredients form our Moon Magic Potion kit:
✨ A spoonful of Star Dust
✨ A spoonful of Intention Sprinkles
✨ A scoop of Moon Stones
✨ 2 teaspoons of Moonbeam Shimmer + 10 spoonfuls of water (or moon water if you're feeling extra mystical)

Stir your potion 3 times clockwise, focusing on something that makes you feel happy and something you’re excited about in the month ahead. Let your mind dance with possibility.

Then recite:

Let the new moon empower me,
With its energy so bold and free.
May my intentions take flight and soar,
Guiding me toward my goals and more.

Drop 3 droplets of your potion onto the paper where you wrote your intentions, fold it up, and tuck it under your pillow. Let the new moon do the rest.

Why intention-setting is good for kids (and grown-ups)

✔️ It builds emotional awareness
✔️ It strengthens focus and mindfulness
✔️ It encourages positive thinking
✔️ It helps kids feel in control of their journey
✔️ It connects them to ritual, rhythm, and nature

And maybe most importantly, it gives them a sense of hope and direction. Something to gently steer them through the wild waters of growing up.

5 Other Ways to Set Intentions on a New Moon (No Potion Required)

Not near a potion kit? No worries. Here are five other beautiful ways to bring new moon intention-setting into your home:

1. Write a letter to your future self

Have your child write (or draw) a note to who they want to be by the next full moon. Fold it up and tuck it somewhere safe. Revisit it in a few weeks.

2. Create an intention jar

Grab a jar and fill it with strips of paper containing words like brave, calm, joyful, kind. Choose one each new moon and talk about what it means to live that word for the month ahead.

3. Do a nature walk and intention find

Take a quiet stroll and collect something that represents your intention—a smooth stone, a flower, a feather. Place it somewhere special as a visual reminder.

4. Draw your dreams

Have your child sketch what they’d like to feel or achieve this month. It could be as simple as “more calm mornings” or “trying something new.” Stick it on the fridge or the mirror.

5. Make a wish under the moonlight

Even if you can’t see the moon, step outside, breathe in the night air, and say your wish aloud. It’s simple. It’s powerful. And it teaches kids that their voice and dreams matter.

Whether it’s through potion play or a quiet moonlit wish, setting intentions is a gentle yet powerful practice. It teaches children that magic doesn’t always come from spells, but it often begins with something far simpler:

✨ A thought.
✨ A feeling.
✨ A tiny seed of self belief.

And just like the moon, it will grow.
